DESCRIPTION OF CONCEPT
I was commissioned by the University Hospitals to design a mural that would represent the special character of Rainbow Babies & Childrens Hospital, that would offer a participatory component and still maintain a strong aesthetic integrity.
Often the format used on a participatory ceramic tile mural is similar to that of a patchwork quilt. Discernibly separate parts or tiles organized into a whole. However, I felt that the depth of care at Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital seemed more like a weaving than a patchwork quilt. A weaving of inseparable, intertwined care and activities aimed at not only curing the illness, but healing the whole child and family. In like manner, "The Rhythm of the Rainbow" was accomplished by the weaving of many efforts. This process of creation, as well as the image, were designed to represent the energy of care, concern, love and fun that pulses throughout the Hospital.
